Where to meet Giant Tortoises in Seychelles

If you’re planning a trip to Seychelles and you’re eager to meet some giant tortoises, Inside Seychelles has got you covered with some fantastic spots to encounter these majestic creatures.

They’ve been here for centuries, even before humans settled in. Some of them can grow up to four feet long, weigh 250kg, and live for over a century. Seychelles, being an isolated destination, have helped protect them from “natural” predators.

These tortoises are native to the Aldabra atoll but can now be found across the Seychelles archipelago. They’ve been protected by Seychelles law since 1974, and they’re recognized as vulnerable by the IUCN, with Aldabra Atoll designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

You can spot them in the wild or in captivity, living both alone and in groups. On Cousine Island, you’ll find Adam, over 100 years old, and Mr. Les, weighing a whopping 326kg. Then there’s Jonathan, the most famous, who’s reached the impressive age of 190.
