About 90% of the country’s 90,000 inhabitants live on the island of Mahé. The other islands that make up the country’s archipelago include La Digue, Praslin, and Aldabra.
The country’s two distinct regions are the coralline outer islands and the Granitic Islands. These are the only oceanic regions that have both coral and volcanic features.
The country’s oldest ocean islands are the Granitic Islands, while the outer islands are relatively young. The two coral groups that are known as the Aldabra and St. Pierre have submerged several times in their history. The last time these occurred was around 125,000 years ago.
