Where is Seychelles located?
Seychelles is a stunning island nation in the Indian Ocean, situated off the east coast of Africa. It lies between 4ºS and 10ºS latitude and 46ºE and 54ºE longitude, making it one of the most remote yet beautiful destinations in the world. The country is closest to Madagascar and Somalia, with its nearest foreign city being Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital.
The Seychelles Archipelago
Seychelles consists of 115 islands, spread across an area of 452 km in width and an exclusive economic zone covering 1,336,559 km². These islands are categorized into two main groups:
- Granitic Inner Islands – The oldest oceanic islands, made of granite, including Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue.
- Coralline Outer Islands – Younger islands primarily made of coral, such as Aldabra and St. Pierre, which have experienced multiple submersions throughout history, with the last occurrence around 125,000 years ago.
Life in Seychelles
The majority of the country’s 100,000 inhabitants live on Mahé, home to the capital, Victoria. Other populated islands include Praslin and La Digue, while many of the outer islands remain untouched, preserving their natural beauty and diverse marine life.
