The Coco de Mer – The largest seed in the plant kingdom
The Coco de Mer is a palm tree native to the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean. People call it the “love nut” or “double coconut” because it’s so unique and captivating.
Let’s dive into some cool facts about it. First off, it produces the largest seeds in the whole plant kingdom! These seeds can weigh up to 30 kilograms and measure about 40-50 centimetres in diameter. And get this—they look like a woman’s pelvis and buttocks, which has led to all sorts of folklore about sensuality and fertility.
What’s really fascinating is how slowly it grows. It takes about six to seven years for the seed to even start sprouting, and then another 25-30 years before it bears fruit. Some of these trees live for hundreds of years, adding to their mysterious vibe.
You’ll mostly find the Coco de Mer on just two islands: Praslin and Curieuse. It’s super rare because of habitat destruction and overexploitation, so it’s protected by law now. But there are a few in Mahe island as well for example at the National Botanical Gardens in Victoria Town
Here’s a twist: while people used to think its seeds floated across oceans, recent experiments show they actually sink due to their heavy weight and permeable husk. So much for the floating legend, right?
Historically, Seychellois folks used every part of the tree for various things. The seeds were thought to be aphrodisiacs, the husks made ropes, and the palm fronds were used for roofing.
And the legends surrounding it are wild! Some say it’s a forbidden fruit associated with love and passion, while sailors spun tales about mermaids when they found Coco de Mer washed up on distant shores.
The Coco de Mer is a botanical wonder that’s been a big part of Seychellois culture for ages. Let’s hope future generations get to experience its beauty and magic too.
