Inspiring the Next Generation

Kerry Ishwar’s Mission to Protect Seychelles’ Environment

Kerry Ishwar didn’t always envision herself as an environmental activist. Originally from South Africa, she spent over a decade working in hospitality and aviation before making a life-changing move to Seychelles two years ago. Seeking a break from the fast-paced, work-centric lifestyle back home, she fell in love with the island’s natural beauty and slower rhythm. That connection with nature, combined with her degree in environmental management, set her on a new path—one dedicated to conservation and education.

Driven by a passion for both the environment and youth empowerment, Kerry founded the initiative, Seychelles Youth Foundation. Through this platform, she works tirelessly to educate young people about environmental challenges, particularly plastic pollution. “It’s not just about keeping the beaches clean,” she explains. “It’s about helping them understand that their actions today will shape the future of Seychelles.”

Unlike traditional environmental education programs, Kerry’s approach is hands-on. Instead of classroom workshops, she organizes community clean-ups, personally guiding participants as they collect plastic waste and learn about its impact on marine life and ecosystems. “I take the kids out to the beaches and show them firsthand the damage plastic pollution causes,” she says. “It’s about leading by example and making them realize that small actions—like not littering—can have a huge impact.”

Her dedication has already made waves in the local community, starting with the Anse Boileau area where she resides. Now, she has ambitious plans to expand her reach, bringing her initiative to schools and other islands like Praslin and La Digue. Her ultimate vision? To make the Seychelles Youth Foundation a nationwide movement that inspires the next generation of environmental stewards.

However, this journey has not been without challenges. Kerry runs her initiative independently, funding all activities out of her own pocket. “I’m not affiliated with any companies or government organizations,” she shares. “I do this because I believe in it, not because it’s a job.” Despite the lack of financial support, her commitment remains unwavering.

A crucial part of her efforts is the role played by her partner, Bradley Esparon. As the unofficial videographer for the foundation, Bradley captures the clean-ups and educational sessions, creating powerful visual content for platforms like YouTube. “Bradley helps with everything—from filming to drone shots,” Kerry says. “It’s just the two of us managing everything, but we make it work.” Their videos help spread awareness, showcasing the real impact of pollution and encouraging more people to get involved.

Beyond raising awareness, Kerry is deeply concerned about the long-term effects of plastic pollution on both marine life and human health. “Plastic waste isn’t just harming wildlife—it’s entering our food chain through seafood,” she warns. “Protecting nature is not just about the environment; it’s about our survival and the future of our children.”

Despite being in its early stages, the Seychelles Youth Foundation is already creating meaningful change. Kerry remains hopeful that more people will join her mission. “If anyone wants to help—whether by volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word—it would be incredible,” she says. “The more people come together for this cause, the bigger the impact we can make.”

Through education, community involvement, and direct action, Kerry is empowering young people to become the next generation of environmental leaders. With her passion, Bradley’s support, and the growing engagement of Seychelles’ youth, the foundation is laying the groundwork for a cleaner, more sustainable future—one beach at a time.
